Amazing Asia !

Peter Tanner - Winner of 2015 Asian Tours

An amazing Asian experience encompassing some of the best golf courses that Thailand and China has to offer was enjoyed by those senior golfers who went on the recent AVGA tour of Asia.

After struggling over the past few years Peter Tanner (Twin Waters Golf Club) certainly found his form and has every right to the title of AVGA Asian Champion after he won both the Thailand and Kunming Tours albeit narrowly from Phil Constable (Northern Golf Club in Victoria).

Peter Tanner’s first visit to Asia was memorable and it was a fine showing of consistency to be able to win both tours consecutively on courses he had never played before. Most players took up the free “Swing Analysis” in Kunming which for some assisted them with their swing and others shocked after seeing their swing for the first time on video.

A highlight during the Kunming Tour was a “Hole in One” on the Par 3 - 17th Hole on the Masters Course at the amazing Stone Forest International Golf Club by Geoff Senior (Killara Golf Club). Amazingly even though Geoff played off a low handicap in his earlier years, it was his first ever “Hole in One” hitting a Rescue 2 into the hole from 169 yards (154 metres) away. Geoff has opted to accept a Ladies Watch for his wife as a memento of his wonderful shot. For those that someday visit Stone Forest look for Geoff’s name on the Hole in One Board in the Clubhouse.

Thailand Commentary

A comment that I often receive is that some seniors would not play in Thailand as it is too humid. With a breeze that regularly comes off the ocean at 11.30 am every day - all of our particpants agreed that our tour of the Hua Hin area was less humid than that of Sydney. Beautiful weather every day and playing on the great golf courses of Banyan (twice) and Black Mountain (twice) - set up a great 6 round event. Phil Constable from Northern Golf Club in Victoria came out firing - winning all of the first three rounds and set up an 8 shot lead from the rest of the field. Peter Tanner from Twin Waters Golf Club in Queensland made up 6 shots in the 4th round where he played Black Mountain for the first time and returned an impressive 36 points. Despite having 36 points in the last two rounds, Phil Constable was unable to hold off Peter Tanner who relished the Banyan and Black Mountain courses shooting 39 and 37 points respectively and getting up to beat Phil Constable by 3 shots.

Kunming China Commentary

After just 3 of the 7 rounds Tony Butler (Wollongong G.C.) opened up a 6 shot lead on the rest of the field. Phil Constable (Northern G.C.) and Peter Tanner (Twin Waters G.C.) reigned him in after the 4th round at the Masters Course in Stone Forest International Golf Club. The last three rounds came down to a tussle between Peter Tanner, Phil Constable and Tony Butler. Phil led by 3 shots going into the final round from Tony Butler, with another 6 shots back to Peter Tanner. But Phil's dissapointing 31 points was met by a terrific 37 points by Peter Tanner at the challenging Lake Course and was enough to see Peter Tanner get up and win by one point.
